Overview

Provide hands-on system administration of Wisconsin Public Television’s (WPT) Production LAN including administration of the IT connectivity between, and software running on, shared media storage disk arrays, an Avid and Adobe Premiere editing enterprise, Omneon media server, and Storage DNA media asset management system.   Install, configure and maintain IP & fiber switches, IP routers, signal routers, closed captioning encoders, operating systems and applications.  Troubleshoot and resolve operational problems, as well as research, evaluate and recommend hardware and software to meet operational needs. 

Assist in a technical capacity on broadcast and digital productions as needed.  This position reports to the Chief Engineer and is responsive to the Operations Manager.

 

Responsibilities

1. Systems administration and technical support

  • Provide hands-on system administration of Production LAN including administration of the IT connectivity between, and software running on, shared media storage disk arrays, an Avid and Adobe Premiere editing enterprise, Omneon media server, and Storage DNA media asset management system.
  • Manage the operation and maintenance of the Production LAN supporting a television broadcast file-based workflow including Avid and Adobe editing systems, media storage and content management tools, video file transcoding, audio recording, and closed captioning with distribution via internet and television broadcast.  
  • Respond to user requests for assistance and malfunction correction; provide technical information and assistance.
  • Diagnose problems and maintain systems software and hardware, including disk arrays, video-over-IP systems, Avocent, VNC, Utah Scientific signal routers, Chyron character generators, closed-captioning encoders, and other television production equipment.
  • Maintain complete documentation of IP addresses, MAC addresses, operating system versions and software versions on equipment connected to Production LAN.
  • Work with ECB Operations Center (OC) staff to facilitate two-way file transfers; and maintain a graphics backup server, including IP network connectivity through respective firewalls.
  • Maintain warranty and maintenance contracts.  Communicate with vendor contacts about software bugs and updates and affected systems compatibility.  Install or oversee installation of manufacturers' hardware and software modifications and/or updates.
  • Ensure back-up of files required for systems and network configuration and recovery.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining departmental operational and capital budgets.
  • Assist in a technical capacity on broadcast and digital productions as needed. 

 

2. Research, evaluation, implementation and testing of new technologies and equipment

  • Oversee station media asset management system, including workflow strategies and any staff training, in collaboration with Media Librarian.  Keep system up to date with software and hardware upgrades.  Train and advise users on new software applications. 
  • Oversee and manage Production LAN security. Install appropriate firewall security and maintain user log-in integrity in conjunction with Vilas Computer Services staff, and other agencies that administer log-in integrity and firewall/security issues for the Administrative LAN.
  • Recommend, install, monitor and maintain UPS systems.
  • Install and manage switches for LANs, virtual LANs, VPNs and WANs.
  • Provide guidance and direction to station management concerning emerging IT-based technologies and file-based workflows.

 

3. Other

  • Collaborate with Avid Administrator and Digital Media Specialist to develop on-going workflow and systems training. Actively participate in problem diagnosis, evaluating workflow strategies, and continuing quality control practices.
  • Attend DoIT information technology meetings and participate on listserves, such as Tech Partners.
  • Maintain and use remote management tools such as VNC (including software distribution and remote control).

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Ability to plan, organize, manage and prioritize multiple projects, schedules and timelines.
  • In-depth knowledge of Information Systems analysis, design and programming techniques.
  • In-depth knowledge to install, set up and operate managed switches for LANs, VLANs, VPNs and WANs.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and ability to affix rack-mount computers and related hardware to equipment racks measuring up to eight feet in height.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends when needed.

 

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, which must include at least 2 years professional experience in IT or digital media.
  • In-depth knowledge of Information Systems analysis, design and programming techniques.
  • Working knowledge of network and computer security tools and technologies.
  • Working knowledge of current Windows and Macintosh computer operating systems, including server systems along with software applications, such as Microsoft Office, Visio and VNC.
  • Working knowledge of Enterprise system management and resource planning related to the performance, scalability, and robustness of the production LAN, editing platforms and broadcast hardware.
  • Hands-on experience with multiple hardware/software environments, including mainframe, workstations, client/server applications, disk arrays and technical support.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

 

Preferred but not Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of media formats and codecs of media file types; knowledge of streaming media methods.
  • Experience with programming, scripting, and markup languages like Visual Basic, Perl, C++, HTML, and XML
  • Knowledge of television production in a broadcast environment.
  • Visual and auditory acuity to determine that productions meet WPT’s technical standards.  

 

Salary

We expect to pay in the $45-$62,000 range annually with actual pay dependent on experience and skills. UW-Extension offers a comprehensive benefits package.
