Position Summary
The Executive Producer of News and Public Affairs (NPA) leads an award-winning team of journalists in the creation of a diverse array of compelling, thought-provoking, informative and engaging broadcast and digital projects. NPA is defined broadly and includes programs and digital projects such as in-depth news reporting, political talk and analysis, debates, issue and event coverage, personal profile & feature storytelling, and documentaries. The common threads are editorial responsibility and integrity as well as determining and creating/maintaining the best possible NPA service for the people of Wisconsin. This position requires impeccable journalism credentials; vision; leadership and management skills; creativity; excellent writing skills; superb communication; independent thought and judgment; flexibility and the ability to lead and participate in teams. The EP will be required to plan strategically in a changing media environment and manage complex projects, with a variety of partners, on deadline.  This is a leadership and supervisory position that includes hands-on producing/journalism work. The position reports to the Director of Production.

Major Responsibilities
A. Journalistic and creative supervision of NPA Unit
  • Function as Project Director or Executive Producer on all NPA projects. Supervise all elements of productions and projects including organization of creative team, project design, timeline, pre-production, studio and location single and multi-camera work, scripting, post-production editing, workflow and delivery of final products.
  • Directly supervise producers and reporters; provide ongoing creative, editorial and process feedback. Oversee and participate in the creative and journalistic supervision of non-NPA staff contributing to NPA projects.
  • Set and maintain the highest level of journalistic standards for all projects and productions.

  • Generate ideas for segments, shows and digital projects; expand on ideas with multi-platform approaches to reach broadest possible audience; initiate and implement program and project ideas.
  • Look broadly at NPA projects and mission seeking new applications, activities and partnerships which extend and enhance each project; be aware of changing technology and media consumption trends of audiences; propose projects that reflect media landscape.
  • Work in partnership with Wisconsin Public Radio. Seek opportunities for partnership projects that would reach new audiences and maximize NPA service to the state.
  • Work collaboratively with other public broadcasting entities and organizations with complementary missions on projects that further the reach and mission of NPA.
  • Evaluate and critique shows and proposals and make recommendations to Director of Production.
  • Work as line or field producer when appropriate or necessary.
B. Administrative supervision of the NPA department
  • Responsible for carrying out all supervisory duties including developing annual staff goals that align with WPT’s strategic and operational plans; creating work plans; providing timely work performance feedback, coaching, and addressing issues as they arise; and providing a formal written performance evaluation annually. Make recommendations about hiring and staffing levels. Accountable for equal employment opportunity in employment, promotion and training.
  • Oversee development and management of NPA budget and individual project budgets. Responsible for working within budgets.
  • Write funding proposals when necessary and participate in other funding activities as required.
  • Oversee scheduling and project assignment of all department members.
  • Responsible for NPA compliance with policies, legal requirements, mandated record keeping, etc.
  • Maintain close working relationships with other station departments to ensure positive working relationships and open communication.
C. Planning
  • Work with NPA staff to develop short and long range plans and goals.
  • Work with WPT Senior Leadership to ensure that goals for NPA programs and projects conform with station Strategic Priorities.
  • Participate in WPT management planning activities for NPA and WPT as a whole.
  • Maintain contact with statewide community through attendance at community events, meetings with community members and leaders, and research related to the needs of the statewide community.
  • Maintain in-depth awareness/knowledge of public policy issues of the state.
D. Effectively engage diverse perspectives and experiences in work products and in organizational interactions, and demonstrate respect for others in all workplace relationships.  Support an equitable, diverse and inclusive work environment.
E. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions

  • Superb journalistic judgment and commitment to professional code of journalistic ethics. Ability and comfort to make editorial recommendations and decisions
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills for engaging team members, station personnel and outside contacts
  • Effective leadership and management skills
  • Ability to travel throughout Wisconsin as required to meet people, explore places, and participate in productions. Ability to work some evenings, weekends and travel overnight as production warrants
  • Visual and aural skills to effectively review and critique video and audio content

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • A four-year college degree in related field or equivalent years of experience
  • At least 5 years full-time experience reporting or producing live and recorded news or public affairs programs, reports or content for television and digital distribution, including at least 3 years in news management or comparable leadership position
  • Proven leadership and communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to provide direction to, coach, supervise, and influence the work of others, from students and early career staff to highly experienced, award-winning journalists. Experience critiquing and providing constructive feedback on ideas, scripts, rough cuts and programs.
  • Evidence of creative, journalistically solid, approaches to a variety of types of show and story production from long-form broadcast to short form social media work
  • Calm and resourceful responses when challenges occur, news breaks, schedule is unexpectedly disrupted and when under tight deadlines
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to oversee multiple on-going projects simultaneously while scrupulously meeting deadlines, budget constraints and editorial and ethical journalism standards
  • Creative, engaging and clear writing/scripting for broadcast, web, and social media audiences. Strong knowledge of A.P. style
  • Collaboration, speaking, listening, writing, presentation, and conflict resolution skills to work closely and effectively with colleagues across teams
  • Experience and success in developing and maintaining budgets
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and develop plans and projects that leverage new and existing technology and opportunities to maximize reach and impact of content
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and successfully with a diversity of people, groups, and those with different experiences; a commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace

Preferred but not Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Wisconsin political, public policy, economic, cultural and other news and issue
  • Experience producing/leading multimedia productions that cross online and social delivery platforms
  • Experience/success working with building and maintaining media partnerships
  • Identification with the mission and purpose of public media

Expected salary for this position is low to mid $70Ks for highly experienced candidates who exceed the qualifications. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
