The Director of Production leads Wisconsin Public Television’s (WPT) Production Department, serves on the WPT’s Leadership (Senior Management) team and reports to the Director of Television.  The Director of Production has overall responsibility for creating, developing, implementing and evaluating WPT productions, for department budgeting and managing department staff. Working in collaboration with other departments, the Director of Production is responsible for the successful, strategic integration of Production with other units and activities, including Programming, Digital, Community Engagement, Education, Marketing and Development. The position requires a person with creativity, drive, ability to lead and manage staff and projects, and to play a key role in WPT’s strategic reinvention and sustaining our mission to boldly enrich, educate and entertain diverse audiences.

A. Management, Planning and Implementation
* Develop goals and strategies for WPT’s Production Department and manage Production department staff.  Responsible for implementing media-based projects and productions that activate WPT’s strategic priorities including impact-oriented work meeting the needs of current and developing WPT audiences.  
* Set and maintain appropriate quality standards for WPT productions and sustain an environment of continuous improvement and evaluation. Lead the creation of programs and projects that support WPT’s mission, with a focus on the people; history; arts and culture; and politics and current events of Wisconsin. 
* Work as hands-on Executive Producer of individual documentaries and projects as needed.
* Provide leadership within WPT. With Leadership Team, develop WPT goals, strategies, and means for implementation and assessment which align with them; as well as principles and practices.   
* Create, steward and sustain relationships with partner organizations to extend the value, reach and impact of our work. 
* Actively seek and experiment with new production models and evolving delivery methods. Collaborate with WPT digital staff on continuing WPT’s digital production evolution.  
* Keep abreast of trends for production, public broadcasting, communications technology, consumer media use and non-profit management and infuse this knowledge into WPT.
* Ensure that WPT production activities are responsive to WPT’s overall community needs assessment through proactive listening strategies and collaboration with community engagement and communications staff. 
* Maintain relationships with other regional and national public media organizations and professional colleagues.  
* Work with WPT Leadership Team to sustain a focus on serving diverse audiences.  Participate in collaborative project design that is driven by collective impact and informed by continuous evaluation, improvement and reinvention.  
* Participate in WPT’s funding cycle through active collaboration with Development Department, and donor and partner cultivation and stewardship. 
* Lead the development of resource allocation and long-range planning tools for Production, including work-plans, budgets, staffing, project prioritization, and organizational structures. Work closely with the Chief Operating Officer in overall station staff and resource allocation and workflows, aligning with station priorities.   
* Participate in the WPT Priorities and Planning Committee.
B. Staff Supervision and Development
* Provide leadership, supervision and ambitious goal-oriented plans for department and department staff.  Track professional development needs and drive training that advances staff opportunities and prepares WPT for the future. 
* Encourage and support inclusive, diverse working climate by promoting engagement with diverse perspectives and experiences in work product and organizational decision-making, including hiring.  
* Perform all supervisory duties including providing timely work performance feedback, addressing issues as they arise, coaching, holding staff accountable for developing work plans and reaching measurable goals tied to WPT’s strategic goals, and providing a formal annual written performance reviews for direct reports.  
C. Other Critical Duties
* Maintain the standards of journalistic ethics and excellence described in Ethical Guidelines for Editorial Staff:
* As a WPT leader, represent WPT in public and with key constituents.
* Collaborate with Director of Compliance on issues of rights, copyright and standards. 
* Collaborate enthusiastically and creatively with Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) fulfilling the strategic goals of both organizations.  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Television Production, Communications or related field and a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible professional experience in television/video production; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.  Minimum 4 years’ experience directly managing staff. 
  • Accomplished Media producer and digital content creator with in-depth knowledge and ability in television production systems, tools and workflow.
  • A future orientation with drive to evaluate and reinvent our work. 
  • Project development and management with experience in multi-platform and cross functional approaches.  
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills including providing constructive feedback.
  • Experience in integrating education/community engagement with media production.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills individually and in a team setting; collaboration skills that actively support a productive, respectful work environment.
  • Proven leadership skills, project administration and budget planning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Collaborative, generous, enthusiastic and creative colleague.
  • Working knowledge of media rights, copyright and standards


  • Public Television experience.
  • Engaged community member with volunteer and other community engagement experience.
