Media Literacy:
Helping kids de-code TV commercials
Students will start to develop critical thinking skills that will help them evaluate media messages and move toward an understanding of how these messages can shape their attitudes and behavior. This lesson plan will help kids begin to develop an awareness of money, and of persuasion in advertising.
Math:
Learning the skills of estimation
Grade 3-5, "When Close Enough is Good Enough" from Cyberchase After discussing the differences between an estimate and a guess, students will view a clip of the animated series CYBERCHASE, and make decisions about making a reasonable estimate to solve a problem. Following the video portion of the lesson, students will visit a variety of Web sites to test their estimation skills.
Socio-emotional:
Helping children to understand and express their feelings
The Dragon Tales "The Way We Feel" activity is a great complement to the "Parenting Counts" workshop and curriculum, available through Wisconsin PBS Kids Outreach.
Literacy:
Storytelling based on visual cues
"WordGirl" is based on classic elements of the story form: a heroine who must overcome multiple obstacles to reach her final victory. The Story Magic lesson plan encourages your student storytellers to use character(s), setting, and plot to create and tell a story, based on visual clues.
