Capitol Insight: Johnson Previews State Biennial Budget

Shawn Johnson is a Capitol reporter for Wisconsin Public Radio. Gov. Scott Walker is expected to release his budget proposal in early February. Walker and Assembly Speaker Rep. Robin Vos, R-Rochester, have butted heads in the past months about transportation funding. The Legislative Fiscal Bureau estimates relatively positive budget numbers ahead of the governor's proposal.

UW Expert Talks About Wisconsin Economy

Laura Dresser is the associate director of the Center on Wisconsin Strategy. Gov. Scott Walker painted a rosy picture of the economy in his state of the state address, but Democrats are not as optimistic. Dresser said the picture is "decidedly mixed," as the state moves into economic recovery but wages are still stagnant.

Rep. Steineke Reacts To State Of State Address

Gov. Scott Walker gave the annual address earlier this week. Republicans are hoping for more transportation funding in this year's biennial budget, but Walker says he won't raise taxes or fees, even for transportation. Walker announced in his address he plans to propose a tuition cut for all in-state undergraduates in the University of Wisconsin System.

Rep. Barca Responds To State Of State Address

Rep. Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, is the Assembly Minority Leader. Walker announced in his speech earlier this week he planned propose tuition cuts for in-state undergraduates in the upcoming state budget. Barca said he hopes the plan will include extra state funding to the university to make up for the lower tuition.

Retired Judges Ask For Higher Recusal Standards

A group of retired Wisconsin judges filed a petition this week to the state Supreme Court. Their proposal would disqualify judges from cases where there could be a conflict of interest, or a appearance of conflict of interest, with a major donor to their campaign.
