Wisconsin State Symbols

Most people could probably guess what Wisconsin's state beverage is... Milk, of course! And you probably also know that our state motto is "Forward."  But did you know Wisconsin also has a state soil?  Or a state fossil? This list at wisconsin.gov lists all of Wisconsin's official state symbols, along with a brief history about why or when each symbol was selected.  There is more information about the symbols at the DNR's "EEK! Environmental Education for Kids" site. This would be a great activity to share with your kids.  On a long car trip, you could turn the list into a quiz game. Print out the images and make a matching game or flash cards. Have kids survey adults they know to see how many of the state symbols they can name!  Connecting kids with their state's identity helps develop their sense of community, and it could someday help them win at trivia!
