There's a Place for Us
With dazzling lights, advanced pyrotechnic effects, a flying bandleader and all of the favorite Badger songs, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Varsity Band returns to Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 3, and again at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 4, for the annual spring concert.
UW Varsity Band Returns To WPT for Annual Spring Concert
Be more Tuned In went behind the scenes at the Kohl Center to speak with Mark Pender, trumpeter and vocalist from Late Night With Conan O'Brien's Max Weinberg Seven. Watch Mark's insightful two-part interview in our inaugural Be more Tuned In Videocast.
Under the direction of Michael Leckrone, this year's show, "There's a Place for Us," commemorates the past year with Badger spirit favorites, energetic medleys and Broadway retrospectives.
Celebrating its 34th year, the
three-night event draws more than 25,000 fans to the Kohl Center in Madison
where Badger fans are treated to the familiar strains of "Varsity," "On Wisconsin," "Songs
to Thee Wisconsin" and "You've
Said it All."
WPT will present highlights from this year's concert, which features medleys
dedicated to the Rolling Stones, one-hit wonders and the music of the 1970s,
as well as selections from the Broadway productions of "West Side Story" and "Hairspray."
Guest artists include Mark Pender and Nat McIntosh. Pender is a vocalist and trumpeter whose work has been featured on albums and tours from Bruce Springsteen, Robert Cray, Diana Ross and others. Pender's energetic performances also can be seen nightly as part of the Max Weinberg Seven on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien." McIntosh, UW-Madison alumnus, is an innovative tuba and sousaphone player. In addition to performances with the Youngblood Brass Band, McIntosh is an educator and musical entrepreneur.
