Volunteer of the Year
2013 Volunteer of the Year
Each year Wisconsin Public Television recognizes one of our many dedicated volunteers with the V. Thomas Metcalfe Volunteer of the Year Award. Named for Tom Metcalfe, a friend of Wisconsin Public Television and dedicated community leader, this award is presented to a volunteer who demonstrates outstanding leadership and commitment to WPT. Our 2013 recipient is Fran Schultz.
Fran's involvement with Wisconsin Public Television dates back to 1991 when she was invited to answer phones at a membership drive with her service organization, the Zonta Club of Madison. As an avid television watcher, she loved the experience and was inspired to seek out new volunteer opportunities with the station. After trying out a variety of different jobs at Auction, she discovered that working on the confirmation call team was a perfect match for her skills and interests. Since 2002, she has served as co-manager of our confirmation area. In her role, Schultz works with a team of volunteers to ensure winning bidders are contacted and provided with payment and pick up information.
Fran strives to provide bidders with the best possible customer service experience. She is a skilled communicator, can expertly address complex situations and has impeccable attention for detail. She works with her volunteers one-on-one to provide training, answer questions, and create a rewarding work experience. In addition, she takes two weeks of personal vacation every year and puts in long hours to ensure that the confirmation area runs efficiently.
In recent years, Fran's volunteer experience has also extended to both Quilt Expo and Garden Expo. She has volunteered her time to sell tickets, check-in volunteers, and work at the information desk.
Fran dedicates her time to public broadcasting because she strongly believes in and supports the mission of Wisconsin Public Television. She is a fan of how-to and Wisconsin-based programs. She regularly watches America's Test Kitchen, Martha Stewart's Cooking School, Wisconsin Foodie and Sewing With Nancy.
Professionally, Schultz is a nursing informatics specialist with UW Hospital and Clinics. She is also actively involved with the Zonta Club of Madison, a service club dedicated to advancing the status of women through service and advocacy. In her free time she enjoys knitting, reading, cooking and spending time with family.
