Volunteer of the Year
2014 Volunteer of the Year
Each year Wisconsin Public Television recognizes one of our many dedicated volunteers with the V. Thomas Metcalfe Volunteer of the Year Award. Named for Tom Metcalfe, a friend of Wisconsin Public Television and dedicated community leader, this award is presented to a volunteer who demonstrates outstanding leadership and commitment to WPT. Our 2014 recipient is Sandy Rupnow.
Sandy began volunteering with WPT in 2008 with the Quilt Expo. She quickly followed that volunteer experience by volunteering at Pledge Drives, Garden Expo, and Auction. By 2010 Sandy had taken on leadership positions at Pledge Drives soon to be followed with leadership positions at all of our events! Sandy truly jumped into volunteering with WPT and has been an unstoppable volunteer ever since!
While Sandy has taken on leadership roles in all of our events, she has become extremely involved in WPT’s Auction. Sandy was an integral part of the Auction team, helping WPT in the months leading up to Auction. At Auction she acts as a Pick Up and Pay Manager and helps coordinate that area during Auction. Sandy was a great leader and helped to train our Pick Up and Pay Cashiers and Runners. Sandy spent countless hours working on Auction this year and we are so thankful for her dedication and commitment to WPT.
Sandy dedicates her time to public broadcasting because she strongly believes in and supports the mission of Wisconsin Public Television. She is currently watching: “Downton Abbey”, “Call the Midwife,” and the murder mystery episodes in Masterpiece Theatre. Sandy also appreciates the quality children’s programming that WPT provides, noting that her children grew up watching “Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” and that she now watches WPT children’s programming with her grandchildren. Sandy recently retired from 25 years with the Madison Metropolitan School District and the Madison Police Department.
Sandy’s advice to people considering volunteering with WPT “Do it! Once you do, you will want to come back again and again. These are some of the nicest people ever. I have worked with wonderful volunteers. WPT has volunteer jobs for all skill levels. There is training for all positions and there is always someone there to help you, if you need assistance. I guarantee: once you volunteer, you WILL come back again!”
