Next Teen Connection Examines the Effects a Homeland Security Program has on Wisconsin's Latino Teens
The next episode of Teen Connection will examine the state of Latino teens living in Wisconsin and will explore the options available to undocumented immigrant youth who arrive in the United States as children.
Teen Connection “Latino Teens” airs statewide 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) and on MPTV in Milwaukee. The program will be streamed live on wpt.org/teenconnection.
The live, call-in program will focus on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a U.S. Department of Homeland Security program that enables some teens to obtain a driver's license and pursue secondary education or employment. According to the agency's website, deferred action does not provide lawful status or a pathway to citizenship, although an individual whose case is deferred will not be considered to be accruing unlawful presence in the United States during the period deferred action is in effect.
Armando Torres, who was granted DACA and is enrolled at University of Wisconsin-Parkside will be featured on the program. Also on the program, a panel of youth will discuss how DACA has had an impact on their lives and education.
Teens throughout the state may call in, text or Facebook related questions that will be answered by a panel of adult experts, including: Benjamin M. Crouse, Associate Attorney with Grzeca Law Group in Milwaukee; Elvita Erdman, Board of Directors President at Casa ALBA Melanie in Green Bay and Natalia Sidon, Liaison, Village of Wrightstown and Green Bay Police Departments.
Teen Connection is co-produced by NEWIST/CESA 7, Educational TV Productions of Northeast Wisconsin (ETP-NEW) and WPT. Host Kathryn Bracho appears courtesy of WBAY-Channel 2 in Green Bay.
