POSITION SUMMARY

Skillfully and successfully operate broadcast quality video cameras, and edit video and audio on non-linear editing systems for Wisconsin Public Television broadcast, online and non-broadcast productions.  Work collaboratively as well as independently utilizing excellent creative, organizational and communication skills.  This position reports to the Production Facilities Manager.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

  1. Use creative and technical videography skills in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor settings to successfully record video and audio which can be turned into exceptional broadcast and digital video reports, documentaries and stories. 
  2. Make decisions about which tools (various camera and microphone types, accessories such as sliders and gimbals, etc.) and techniques are appropriate to use for different styles and settings of shoots to most successfully achieve the goals of the story, report, program or project.   
  3. Make decisions about, and successfully set up and use, field lighting equipment to achieve appropriate look and style for differing projects. 
  4. Use creative and technical editing skills to turn producer-generated scripts and/or rough cuts into exceptional broadcast and online video reports, documentaries and stories. 
  5. Maintain technical standards in a digital, non-linear editing environment through understanding common graphic, video and sound file formats and working with these file formats in a digital editing environment
  6. Proactively generate creative elements and use visual and audio techniques that enhance the style of a given program or segment and strengthen the storytelling. Use Photo Shop and After Effects as appropriate.  Stay current with principles of good graphic design and layout.
  7. Stay current with the latest technical equipment and videography and editing techniques.  Proactively seek new, efficient ways to accomplish tasks and professional development to improve skills.
  8. Comfort with the technical aspects of broadcast field camera equipment and post production equipment and  able to trouble-shoot in a self-directed manner when technical challenges arise.
  9. Communicate effectively and professionally; handle multiple tasks and priorities; adhere to production timelines and budgets; meet all deadlines.

  11. Effectively engage diverse perspectives and experiences in all workplace interactions and demonstrate respect for others in all workplace relationships.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

·         Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and have free range of body motion and correctible vision to focus camera, for extended periods of time including extended workdays or work weeks when on deadline.

·         Ability to sit for extended periods of time while editing including extended workdays or work weeks when on deadline.

·         Fine motor coordination to effectively manipulate broadcast field cameras and adjust video and audio level controls.

·         Creative video storytelling skills combined with editorial judgment.  Follow professional code of ethics.

·         Able to travel for extended periods of time and work in locations distant from Madison in order to perform videographer duties throughout Wisconsin.

·         Calm and resourceful responses when challenges occur, or when schedule is unexpectedly disrupted and when under tight deadlines.

·         Accept directions well from a range of producers on staff and respond professionally.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

·         Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; this must include at least 2 or more years of professional videography and editing experience.

·         Experience recording effective field video and audio that meets proper broadcast technical specifications in a      variety of settings.

·         Experience editing broadcast or other professional video stories, reports or projects. 

·         Demonstrated ability to be self directed, work independently and work in teams to consistently meet deadlines.

·         Excellent communication skills, a desire to learn, and a proactive attitude.

·         Ability to work some evenings, weekends and travel overnight throughout Wisconsin as stories warrant.

·         Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required or ability to obtain one.

 

NOT REQUIRED BUT DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

·    Familiarity with and experience operating Canon C100 camera package and full ranges of lenses.

·    Audio recordist experience working in complicated sound situations (ie: group interviews, noisy environments, music, etc.)

·    Skill with Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, or equivalent non-linear editing systems 

·    Experience editing longer form (5-10 minute up to an hour) reports or programs

·    Camera operator experience on live, directed, studio or location productions.

·    Video storyteller, reporter, scriptwriter, interviewer or field producer experience
